Less Than A Week

Science Olympiad Regionals are this Saturday!

We still need drivers! I have yet to hear from anyone who can drive. We have ten students that need transportation to & from Dahlonega. (I’d be happy to drive, but insurance won’t cover teachers driving students.) We will leave Milton parking lot Saturday morning at 6:30. The awards ceremony starts at 4pm. I’d plan on leaving around 5-5:30 p.m.. In years past we’ve parents who only drive in the morning and parents who drive only in the afternoon. We’ve also had parents drive both and hang out with us all day. Please email me if you can drive.

Snacks: I’ll bring a cooler and a cardboard box. You can bring snacks/drinks any time this week and drop them off in my classroom or have them ready the morning of the event. It’s going to be a long day – be sure to bring a lunch! (We have not found any microwaves at these events in the past. Bring something on ice.)

Meeting Tomorrow in Lanham’s Room: Remember to meet tomorrow after school in my room. We’ll finish gathering supplies. You do know exactly what supplies you need for your event, right?

- Lanham

We will be discussing preparations for the Regionals.

Invitational Cancelled

After much thought and discussion, I have decided that we cannot go to the Invitational due to the lack of participation. Science Olympiad is a team. Teams are composed of up to fifteen students and less than half that number have actually committed to attending the Invitational. It is not fair for us to prevent schools who have full teams from attending the event.

I’m sorry for those of you committed and excited about going. I will be submitting the registration materials for the February Regionals soon. I hope to take a full team of fifteen students. I have already secured the $125 registration fee for this event. Dues will cover materials for the events. If you have not paid your $10 dues, please come by to pay. Cash or Checks (made out to “Milton High School”)

We will not meet next week. I have already committed to proctoring an event for Alpharetta’s Invitational and will need extra time to prepare. Look on this blog for an announcement for the next meeting. (sign up for email updates if you haven’t already)

Invitational – Imporant, Please Read!

Invitational

The invitational is in 19 days. So far we have eight people confirmed with two counts of “Maybe”. We need 15 people to make a team!

Go to the Wiki and look at the events lists (under the Invitational page). Go sign up for the wiki if you haven’t already!

Dues

I have had four people pay their dues of $10. Unless there is more interest, I will only submit for one team (15 students) for the February competition.  We cannot get an official rulebook until we register for February’s competition.

Next Meeting

Monday, November 2nd

A few details regarding the Invitational

I have some information about the Invitational you will all want to read. These come from emails from the Science Olympiad Coach at Alpharetta High School.

The following are the teams for our practice competition with the events that they are hosting/ writing tests for:

Chattahoochee High School – 2 teams – Disease Detectives and Fossils

                        Berkmar High School – 2 teams – Ecology & ????

Brookwood High School – 2 teams – Chemistry Lab and Technical Problem Solving

Oak Ridge High School – 2 teams – Cell Biology and Astronomy

                        Dooly High School – 2 teams –  ??????? & ???????

Rockdale Magnet – 1 team – Write It, Do It

Friendship Christian School – 1 team – Dynamic Planet

Collins Hill – 1 team – Experimental Design

Milton High School – 1 team – Remote Sensing

If there are question marks by your name, please let me know which one of the following that you can write a test for.

We have abandoned the team format for this competition.  This means that there will be no team awards.  Instead, we will focus on the individual members of the teams. This is designed to help you evaluate the overall abilities of members of your team.  There are several locations that have food very close to our school.  We will direct you to those on the day of the competition.

I have also included a classroom layout for the events and a tentative schedule for events.  The Egg-o-Naut will be weather dependent.  Everything else should be set in stone.  However, if you have any special requests for the rooms, please let me know.  Almost all of the classrooms are lab classrooms.  However, the even numbered rooms are true lab rooms with power supplies at each of the seven stationary tables, as well as sink at the end of each.  The odd numbered rooms have lab tables, but are not necessarily true lab rooms.  If your event needs a true lab room and you are not scheduled in one, please let me know.  I hope that I have covered everything that I need to.  If not, please do not hesitate to respond to this email and let me know.

Here are the attachments to the email: Classroom Layout 1 - Classroom Layout 2 - SO Event List

And also:

Coaches,

Two things that I forgot to mention: (I was afraid of this!)

-       We will have a snack/ drinks table set up for the students and parents.  This will more than likely be set up in the cafeteria.  If there is a change to that, I will let you know on the day of the competition.

-       Coaches will have a snack area in room 3310.  This will also be the room where all results will be submitted.

I hope that is everything.

Thank you,

Scott Cole

Next Meeting, Dues and Invitational

Next Science Olympiad Meeting is Monday 10/26 3:30-4:00 pm in room 4304. (We will meet weekly until the Invitational)

Dues this year are $10. Dues will be used to buy supplies for preparations and competitions. If paying by check, make checks out to “Milton High School”.

The Invitational is Saturday, November 14th at Alpharetta High School. We can enter 15 students (more should be able come to see what it’s about, which is a good idea) but I’ve only had 7 students confirmed that they are planning to go! Cost is $60/team. If we have 15 students on the team (max) it will cost $4 per person. This is an important practice event. If you are not attending plan on supporting and helping those who are. Event assignments will be posted on the Wiki soon. (see directions for signup for an account on the wiki)

Also, only nine people have signed up to receive these announcements via email! Please help spread the word! (Parents can sign up too!)
